Richmond History Group

The Richmond History Group is based at Avebury House. The group maintains a collection of books, photographs and other memorabilia illustrating and recording the history of Avebury House and the development of the surrounding suburb of Richmond. We seek to expand the collection and have begun a project to digitise items from the collection and make them available online. This is a work-in-progress and we will be adding items to this site from now on.

If you have photographs or other material concerning Richmond’s past, we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you would like to donate items to the collection, or allow us to view the material and if suitable, borrow items for recording and adding to our digital archive. We would of course return the items to you in the same condition as we received them.

If you would like to learn more about the group, or become involved, please contact Andrea at 381-6615.

Pamela Cookson recently has loaned us her copy of a recipe book, put out by the Richmond Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild in 1944. The book has been well-used, as witnessed by the cover (above).
The book belonged originally to Pamela’s grandmother, Lydia Cochrane, and was then passed on to her mother, Phyllis Mills, who also attended the Methodist Church. Pamela has made great use of the book in the intervening years, and states that many of the recipes are well worth making. I have scanned the book and prepared a PDF document, available for download, below. We also have a printed copy in the history room at Avebury House.

The booklet makes a wonderful souvenir of a now distant time, when wartime rationing and shortages affected many aspects of life in Richmond and throughout New Zealand; none more so than in food supply and preparation. The book includes recipes provided by thirty-eight guild members, many of whom lived locally.

In our collection we have a group photo of the 1939 Richmond Methodist Church Bible class, which includes several of the women who contributed to the recipe book.
